Research project
Design and Development of a reliable gas measurement system for an efficient operation of biogas plants
A reliable, undisturbed operation of biogas plants demands the knowledge of the composition of the produced gas, especially in terms of possible corrosions caused by occurring hydrogen sulfide. Co-generation plants attached to the biogas fermenter demand for complying limits of H2S concentration to minimize damage to the combustion engines. A continuous monitoring of the H2S content can prevent corrosion induced failure on an early stage.
In parallel, the level of methane (CH4) provides basic information on the fundamental digestion processes. Low CH4 levels indicate inhibitions in the biochemical reaction chain and incomplete decomposition. Measuring the content is thus prerequisite for defining changes in the digestion routine. In addition it allows for determination of the calorific value, crucial when upgrading to biomethane, a highly significant emerging scenario. Almost all future facilities are configured for gas upgrading, as it offers efficient energy storage and distribution.
Based on the described requirements and challenges reliable and accurate sensory units shall be developed, which are able to measure both the methane and the hydrogen sulfide concentration selectively. This shall lead to an innovative, competitive measurement unit, superior to existing solutions, which are either lacking of selectivity or long-term stability or are too expensive for a broad applicability.
