Research project

Wireless power and data transmission concepts have gained a widespread use with the emergence of RFID systems. Promising future applications are within the fields of biomedical implants, portable electronics or small-scale IoT sensors, requiring both high power transfer efficiency and resistance against misalignment for the energy transmission and very-high-bit-rate capabilities for the data communication interface.  However, the efficiency of wireless power transfer systems do not scale well with the ongoing miniaturization of such systems, while misalignment and tilt decrease the efficiency even further due to variation of the optimal load characteristics. Moreover, classical RFID interfaces scale well for data rates up to several 100 kBit/s, but to not allow for transmission in the MBit/s range while establishing efficient power transfer.

As a result, the proposed research project targets a highly-integrated, miniaturized, efficient and fast near-field power and communication link that might serve as a core component of next-generation implants and sensors. Therefore, the electromagnetic interface is modeled considering higher order loss effects and multi-coil topologies, and subsequently optimized for the highest possible power transfer efficiency under a given size restriction. To maintain this power efficiency under a large set of circumstances, principles of dynamic impedance matching are investigated and applied to both transmitter and receiver circuits, in particular considering adaptive power amplifiers and concepts of maintaining the inductive link within its maximum efficiency point. As far as the communication interface is considered, methods of increasing the data rate, as using higher frequency bands or higher-order modulation schemes, will be investigated and implemented.
