Research project

At the Faculty of Management Science and Engineering at Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, a system for solar cooling of the faculty building is put into operation. Core element is an adsorption cooling machine that uses heat supported by flat plate collectors and vacuum tube collectors to reduce the temperature of a coolant, while heat can be stored inside a warm water tank. Air conditioning is realised using fan coils that are supported with storable cool water, chilled down by the adsorption cooling machine. So far, the system control will only use current measurement data for adjusting the system settings to achieve the desired temperature.

Aim of the research project is the development and implementation of a model for optimal control of the system with Model Predictive Control (MPC) to generate prospective operational plans for adequately adjusting the room temperature to the performed activities, daytime, and season. To determine the optimal operating plans, measurement data (e. g. room temperature) and forecast data (e. g. weather forecast, expected number of people inside the room) shall be considered, while the optimality of the control shall i. a. be measured by the consumption of non-renewable energy which shall be minimized.

For this application, tools for automatic design and implementation of appropriate controllers that build upon and extend existing toolchains are being developed. Among those will be tools for automatic formulation and solving of Optimal Control problems, Parameter Estimation problems and Model-based Optimum Experimental Design problems for system models implemented in the Modelica language. For this, the CasADi optimization framework as well as the JModelica compiler will be used.
