Research project

Modeling of the Electric Arc Furnace Process by Object-Oriented Methods

Electric arc furnaces (EAF) are used to melt steel out of steel scrap or direct reduced iron. The main power inputs are electrical energy from grid and energy from fossil fuels. Due to its high energy demands of approx. (600 to 700) kWh/t and its high connection powers of up to 150 MVA, EAF are among the biggest consumers in the power grid. Further its characteristic batch process and the fluctuating arc power result in a highly dynamic process.

For this reasons dynamic physical models are needed to fully understand the process and to further optimize the system. Nevertheless till today in engineering research mainly models of subsystems or static models are reported. Thus this research project tries to realize a dynamic physics based system model of the EAF process.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the framework concept 'IngenieurNachwuchs' (03FH00212).
