Research project
The expansion of electricity generation capacities from renewables is deemed as crucial for the German ‘Energiewende’ policy and the efforts to establish a more decentralized energy system. The interest of my thesis lies at the role of citizens in this policy field. Along with the well-studied engagement of citizens who seek to become part of the energy production and distribution system, concerted efforts to object the development of such infrastructural projects in particular locations are another important form of bottom-up initiative seeking to influence energy policy. Similar efforts can be observed also vis-à-vis coal-based energy projects.
In the frame of my thesis, I study organized local resistance towards two different technologies: civil initiatives opposing the development of wind energy projects and such opposing the construction of coal-fired power plants. I will perform a discourse analytical, explorative study of cases in Germany and Kosovo as two settings with fundamental differences in terms of their economic and political situation and conditions.
