Research project

Real-time data aggregation is one of the important operations of the smart grids; as large numbers of smart meters that are deployed at the customer’s premises are intend to collect the data related to energy consumption, which then periodically reports to the control center for realizing the efficient distribution of the electricity in the grid. The goal of our work is to construct scalable and reliable decentralized data aggregation network.
In decentralized network architectures performing data aggregation functions (such as, COUNT, MAX, MIN, SUM and AVERAGE), can be realized in one of the three computing paradigms 1) hierarchical/structured, 2) gossip/unstructured and 3) hybrid. However, we consider that the smart meter nodes in decentralized network are prone to transient failures and are highly dynamic in nature. Given this, in our research we define and develop different strategies that lead to minimization of transient failure effect. Our consideration of network architecture is fully decentralized, continuously evolving and self-organizing with strategies such as, identifying reliable route to the sink node by attaching to residual/reliable node in the network.
