Research project

Grid friendly and robust power management of thermo-electrical hybrid powersystems based on ripple control

A quarter  of Germanys electricity demand was already met by renewable generation in 2014, showing a rising tendancy for the future. Following the integration of more and more fluctuating renewables in the system, the efficiency of the demand-supply balancing task if delivered by generation, will be greatly reduced. Furthermore, the integration of low carbon demand technologies, such as electric vehicles, will stress the electricity distribution network. Reducing peak demand through demand response is necessary to prevent high network investments.

In our project, we investigate the options and limits of realising demand shifting via a dynamic, two-level tarif system based on a complex reference input (e.g. the EEX day ahead price). The tarifs will be sent out to the prosumers using the well approved and established ripple control technique. Lokal energy management systems will interprete the tarif plans and optimise their schedule using predictive control algorithms. In addition to demand shifting, real-time manipulation of the powersystems like reducing powerstates and influencing reactive power output will be implemented. Basic Smart Grid functionalities will hence be realised with a cheap and sturdy technology.

The project is funded through the Federal State Postgraduate Scholarships Act (Landesgraduiertenförderungsgesetz – LGFG) within the cooperative graduate school “Decentralized sustainable energy systems” (abbr. DENE).
